Fire Service Evacuates Gas Stations, Day Care Following Fuel Tanker Accident in Gwinnett

Athens man

On Tuesday morning, March 2nd, the fire service evacuated a daycare center and two gas stations following a fuel tanker accident in Gwinnett County. The accident report showed that the tanker crashed at an intersection and spilled its content onto the roadway.

The incident happened on Braselton Highway at Hamilton Mill Road near Interstate 85 at about 5:30 a.m. According to the Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman, Capt. Tommy Rutledge, a hazmat team worked to contain the fuel leakage.

The fire service released the daycare name as the Discovery Point Daycare and the gas stations as QuikTrip and BP, respectively. Gwinnett Fire spokesman Donald Strother said the tanker carried 8,500 gallons of fuel, and about 3,000 of it spilled.

Strother said there were two impact points. One was at the top of the dome, while the other was at the rear of the carriage unit. Some of the fuel went into a nearby storm drain, and the authorities have not determined how much.

Rutledge said they had to establish a 500-foot hot zone perimeter to identify the amount of fuel that entered the storm drain. He added that the spillage did not affect the drainage system in the crash zone. Paramedics examined the tanker driver, and there’s no report of an injury at this time.

There is also no evidence of another car’s involvement in the occurrence in the fuel tanker accident in Gwinnett County. Hamilton Road at Braselton Highway remained closed in all directions while the hazmat crew cleared the spillage. The roads remained closed until about 3 p.m. There is no additional information.

Crashes of this nature are not very common, but they can have dire consequences. Thus, tanker drivers must operate their vehicles with care and clarity of mind. Contact a Georgia car accident attorney for immediate help and guidance.
