Teenage Girl charged Following Fatal Gwinnett Motorcycle Crash

motorcycle accident

A teenage driver is facing a charge of second-degree vehicular homicide in Georgia.

The charged stems from a Fourth of July crash that claimed the life of 51-year-old motorcyclist Clinton Matthews.

The accused is 18-year-old Loganville resident Aaliyah Ritchie.

Gwinnett County police said Mathews died in hospital more than two weeks after the accident at the junction of Grayson Highway and Rosebud Road.

The motorcyclist and a passenger were heading south on Grayson Highway around 1:30 p.m. when Ritchie made a left turn in front of them. She was driving a Honda Pilot.

Both of the individuals on the motorcycle were ejected and Matthews passed away on July 19 at the Mesun Hospice Facility in Lawrenceville, GA.

The identity and condition of the passenger have not been made public.

Matthews worked as an auto parts manager and he is survived by his wife Rebecca, children Clinton and Hannah, and mother Sara.

Meanwhile, Ritchie is also accused of failure to yield while turning left.

She was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail and then released later on a $12,500 bond.

Second-degree vehicular homicide is a misdemeanor in Georgia. It refers to causing the death of an individual while committing certain traffic offenses.

Conviction typically results in up to a year in jail and/or up to $1,000 in fines.

The number of car accidents in Georgia continues to be of concern. In June, the Georgia State Patrol recorded that the number of crashes had doubled.

Troopers from Newnan’s Post 24 investigated 46 crashes compared to 21 in May. June’s accidents resulted in 12 reports of injuries and two fatalities.
