The police responded to a logging truck crash in Montezuma this past Monday. On May 4, 2020, at about 6 pm, a report came in regarding a two-car crash on Georgia Highway 80. The Georgia State Patrol arrived at the scene to find two vehicles along the side of the highway.
One vehicle was a Mack Truck driven by 64-year old Robert Brooks of Eastman, Georgia. He was operating a logging truck and was traveling along the Southbound lanes of Highway 80. He was at a red light at the intersection of GA 80 and Travelers Road. At the same time, another vehicle was approaching the intersection. This second car was an Acura Integra being driven by 68-year old Belinda Woods. Woods was traveling East on Travelers Road.
As the two approached the intersection, Brooks hit the side of Belinda Woods’ car. The crash was so serious that Woods had to be airlifted to the Medical Center in Macon, Georgia. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital that same evening.
Miraculously, Brooks wasn’t hurt in the crash. He did remain on the scene and is believed to have been cooperative with the investigation. The police have no indicated exactly what caused the crash. It doesn’t appear that Brooks ran the red light as the report stated that he was stopped at a red light prior to the crash.
No charges have been filed at this point. We imagine this could change once the investigation is complete. There was no mention of alcohol or drugs being a factor in the crash that claimed the life of Belinda Woods.
