The 67-year-old Athens man who was injured in a traffic accident on Timothy and Epps Bridge Roads in August passed away. The Athens-Clarke County Police shared the news of Robert Thomas Stephens’s death on Tuesday, September 14th. The Athens man was involved in a two-vehicle collision on August 28th.
The driver of the other vehicle involved, 21-year-old Sean Brown from Monroe, has been charged with driving under the influence. The ACCPD received news of Stephens’s death from the Athens-Clarke County Coroner on Friday, September 10th. They stated that the death marked the 17th fatal crash in the county this year.
On the day of the accident, the victim drove a 2005 Buick LeSabre. He turned left onto Timothy Road from Epps Bridge Road when a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Brown, struck him. The collision left both drivers injured, with Stephens sustaining life-threatening injuries. Medics transported him to a local hospital.
Brown, on the other hand, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at a local hospital. Further investigation by the ACCPD led to Brown getting cited for DUI-Alcohol and Serious Injury by Vehicle. The inquiry into the occurrence is ongoing.
The police advised the public to use ride-sharing services after drinking or get a designated driver. This is because serious accidents result from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In Georgia, an at-fault drunk driver, in addition to facing a criminal charge, would also face civil action from a surviving victim. This is known as a personal injury claim.
Where the victim dies, their beneficiaries can commence a wrongful death action. In either case, the victim or their survivors get economic and non-economic damages.
