A Lawrenceville man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal accident that occurred on Sunday night.
The Georgia State Patrol said Franklin County Deputy William Garner suffered fatal injuries as he responded to a single-car crash on I-85 at mile marker 164.
The accident occurred at 7 p.m.
Garner was assisting the people involved in the crash when the driver of a 2018 Honda Accord lost control of his vehicle.
The 53-year-old was rushed to the hospital where he passed away.
The driver of the Honda was 21-year-old Abdulhafiz Abdullahi, and he is facing a charge of homicide by vehicle 1st degree.
The deputy’s older sibling, Dave Garner, said his brother was always extremely cautious when he was on a highway. Dave pointed out that William was very aware of the dangers of what he was doing before he was struck.
“He watched out for other people and was always kind of anticipating something like this could happen, which just makes the fact that it did happen, even more devastating,” Dave Garner was quoted as saying.
Garner previously worked with the Pendergrass Police Department and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, July 25 at Bethlehem Church in Bethlehem.
Meanwhile, Clayton police say one individual was killed on Tuesday morning in a crash that blocked a major interstate in Clayton County.
The accident happened a little before 7 a.m. on the ramp from I-285 East to I-75 South. it involved a tractor-trailer, a car, and an SUV.s
Clayton police spokeswoman Officer Aubriel Stroud said other people involved in the crash suffered minor injuries. However, it is not clear how many other people were hurt.
It is also not yet known what caused the crash.
