Three people lost their lives in a four-vehicle collision in Bulloch County on Sunday, March 14th. According to the Georgia State Patrol, a tractor-trailer towing a tanker traveled westbound on Interstate 16 in the right lane.
The tractor-trailer rear-ended another vehicle from behind, and it caught fire. The impact pushed the car into the rear of another tractor-trailer. In the process, another car got sideswiped. Cpl. Joshua Riddle with the GSP said the occupants of the vehicle that caught fire died at the scene.
The Bulloch County Coroner identified the victims but has not released their names. The GSP said there was one person in the tanker and two people in the tractor-trailer. The investigators have not determined how many people were in the fourth vehicle.
Cpl. Riddle said they’re trying to figure out if a mechanical issue caused the crash or distracted driving. The corporal said they are open to other options but are still investigating. The four-vehicle collision in Bulloch County led to the closure of the westbound lanes of I-16 for most of Sunday afternoon. The lanes reopened in the evening.
The GSP had the assistance of the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, Bulloch County Fire Department, and Georgia Department of Transportation. There is no additional information.
A multiple-vehicle collision is not uncommon in Georgia and other parts of the United States. It is caused mainly by the negligent acts of drivers. Common causes of this type of traffic accident include driving over the speed limit, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, tailgating, and road rage.
It is vital to determine the at-fault driver in multiple-vehicle crashes to allow the victim to receive compensation. In such instances, it is better to avoid taking the blame before speaking with a Georgia auto accident lawyer.
