Georgia police responded to a multi-vehicle crash in Oxford on Highway 36. It was about 10:45 in the morning on Sunday, May 31. While most people were in church, an elderly couple from Newton were fighting for their lives in a fatal wreck.
Benjamin and Sandra Christian were traveling on Highway 36 in the mid-morning traffic. Benjamin Christian was a 72-year old retired Lifeflight helicopter pilot. His wife, Sandra, was 70-years old at the time of the crash.
While on the highway, the Christians’ car was hit head-on by an approaching vehicle. The make and model of the car that hit them has not been released. The head-on crashed caused the Christian’s vehicle to flip over and roll.
While the car was rolling, it was hit by yet another vehicle. The crash was so severe, that neither Benjamin nor Sandra Christian were able to survive their injuries. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial crash happened when the first car lost control of their vehicle and crossed the center line. It drove right into oncoming traffic when it hit the Christians.
The police are still investigating the crash. There is no indication that impairment played a role in the accident. However, there aren’t a lot of reasons why someone would cross into oncoming traffic and cause a head-on collision.
There has been no statement from the victims’ family. However, in cases like this, they’ll likely have a claim for wrongful death.
There was no update given on the condition of the drivers and passengers in the other two vehicles. Their names have also been withheld at this time.
