The police responded to what would be a tragic accident this past Tuesday. The single-car crash in Brunswick happened at about 11:09 pm near Selden Park and Newcastle Street. While it only involved one vehicle, the crash would prove to be quite serious.
Matthew Maxwell was driving his 2013 Nissan Rogue along 4th Street as it approached Newcastle. For some reason, he lost consciousness and then lost control of his vehicle. He crossed the road toward the Ross Road entrance to Selden Park. After crossing the intersection, his SUV crashed into tree and overturned.
In the car with Matthew was his wife, Cecilia Maxwell and his 13-year old son, Matthew Maxwell, Jr. Thankfully, Matthew Jr. only suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The same cannot be said for his mom and dad.
35-year old Cecilia Maxwell suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, Matthew, was critically injured in the accident. He was taken by helicopter to UF Health Hospital in Jacksonville. He is currently listed as being in critical condition.
The couple had another teenage daughter who was not in the car at the time of the crash. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the children. They are currently staying with their aunt.
From what the family has posted online, it doesn’t appear that Matthew Maxwell, Sr. is expected to survive. However, that has not been confirmed by the authorities.
The investigation is still ongoing. The police aren’t sure what could have caused the driver to lose consciousness. It could have been due to a medical issue or he could have been under the influence of something at the time of the crash.
